Although Caymus Vineyards is best known for Cabernet Sauvignon, the Wagner family also produces a small amount of Zinfandel, which was a favorite of Caymus' Charlie Wagner. In many ways, Zinfandel is a quintessential California wine. It was one of the early varieties to be planted in Northern California by immigrants from Europe. Limited production.

The 2014 growing season was another great one in Napa Valley. Our Cabernets are a blend of wines from eight of the sixteen sub-appellations – a bottling that represents complexity through judicious blending. Deep red and opulent in color with the vibrant scent of dark cherry and blackberry, subtly layered with warm notes of vanilla. The palate is explosive, bright and balanced with cassis at the center, with flourishes of cocoa and sweet tobacco.

Caymus Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon is the only wine in the world twice honored as "Wine of the Year" by Wine Spectator Magazine (chosen amongst approximately 10,000 wines). Our quality is the result of a singular focus on cabernet grape growing in a climate where the soils and vines respond very well. This bottling represents the best lots of the vintage.

It all started with appreciating good Malbec. Red Schooner is a “Red Wine of the World”, an experiment of more than five years in the making and started in the Winter of 2009/2010. You won’t find a vintage date – each vintage will be known by the voyage from which it was produced. This third bottling is made from Mendoza Malbec grapes shipped chilled to Napa Valley and produced in our “Caymus” style. A dense, dark red, this wine opens up with the scent of ripe plums and cherries, layered with hints of baking chocolate. On the palate, it is powerful, concentrated, supple and persistent. This wine is unfined and may throw a bit of sediment, representing the rich and natural concentration of abundant quality.

On the nose, aromas of citrus, iron, wet stone and a hint of D’Anjou pear tempt your senses, while a crisp lightness and underlying notes of fleshy grapefruit and lime zest please the palate.

Grapes for this vintage were sourced from the Emmolo Oak Knoll vineyard located near the city of Napa in a sub-appellation called Oak Knoll. It’s ten miles nearer the San Francisco Bay than Rutherford and has a cooler microclimate. The site was strategically chosen for its soils and moderate climate, which are appropriate for growing Merlot.

This unoaked wine captures the pure, clean expression of Chardonnay from our Mer Soleil Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands of Monterey County. The mineral essence is reminiscent of the classic Chablis style with the elements found in Chardonnays from the Pacific Coastline. These grapes are fermented in cement tanks, without oak contact.

The Mer Soleil Vineyard is named for the two natural forces that create its growing conditions: sea (mer) and sun (soleil). With plantings at two separate locations in the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation of Monterey County, our Mer Soleil Chardonnay vines are nestled on east-facing lower slopes of the Sierra de Salinas range in what is one of the coolest, direct grape-growing area in Califormia. The climate of this coastal appellation causes morning and evening fog and warm, bright afternoons, a combination that produces the high-quality fruit we use to make this bright, elegant Chardonnay.

We believe in the power of place - even subtle differences in sun, wind and proximity to the ocean can have a strong influence on the wine's unique character, opening up new possibilities for Chardonnay. Beautiful Santa Barbara County is slightly warmer than the Santa Lucia Highlands, where we first planted Chardonnay grapes in 1988. At harvest we pick the grapes a little earlier than in the Highlands, catering to the climate and creating a wine natural acidity and crispness.
